Front two teeth broken?!?

What to do if your front two teeth are broken?

Breaking your front two teeth can be a shocking and stressful experience. Whether it’s due to a fall, accident, or biting into something too hard, the appearance and function of your smile can be significantly affected. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers several solutions to restore your teeth and your confidence.

Common causes of two front broken teeth

Your front teeth are particularly vulnerable because they’re used constantly for biting and speaking. Common causes include:

  • Sports injuries or falls are the most common reason we see kids for that have the two front teeth broken.

  • Biting hard foods like ice or candy.
  • Grinding or clenching teeth (bruxism).

  • Existing dental decay can lead to breaking the teeth.

These teeth shattered into many small pieces but the dad was able to find most of the pieces and we put him back to together.

What to do immediately after the injury

If your front two teeth are broken, take these steps right away:

  1. Find and save any tooth fragments! This makes the job of putting you back to together much easier and better looking too!  Unless the entire tooth is knocked out, it doesn’t matter how you store the pieces.
  2. Apply a cold compress to your lips to reduce swelling and pain.

  3. Call your dentist immediately for emergency care.

Even if the break seems minor, prompt evaluation is important in order for the dentist to determine if care is urgent or not.

Dental treatment options for two broken front teeth

The best treatment depends on how much of each tooth is broken:

  • Dental bonding: Great for small chips or cracks. A tooth-colored resin is applied and shaped to match your natural tooth. This is when finding the broken pieces is really helpful.

  • Porcelain veneers: Ideal if both teeth are mostly intact but have cosmetic damage. Veneers cover the front surface of the tooth.

  • Dental crowns: We will do crowns when a large portion of the tooth is missing or weakened. Crowns protect and restore function.

  • Root canal therapy: May be needed if the break exposes the nerve. These teeth will sometimes also need a crown.

  • Tooth extraction and implants: In cases of severe damage where we can not save the tooth, extraction and replacement with a dental implant may be necessary.

Preventing future damage

Once your broken front teeth are repaired, your dentist may recommend protective measures:

  • Wear a mouthguard during sports or if you grind your teeth at night.

  • Avoid chewing hard objects like ice or pens.

  • Fabricate a nigh guard or retainer to help protect the integrity of the tooth at night. This is a really good idea if the two front teeth broke from grinding or clenching.
