How to Remove a Dental Bridge Using a WAM Key: A Step-by-Step Guide
Wam keys are a great tool to remove dental bridges traumatically. While any dentist can quickly and efficiently remove a dental bridge, there is a specialized tool called a WAM Key that allows for safe bridge removal without excessive force. This blog will guide you through the process of removing a dental bridge using a WAM Key.
What is a WAM Key?
A WAM Key is a precision dental instrument that allows dentist to remove fixed dental prosthetics, such as crowns and bridges, without destroying the prosthesis. Unlike standard methods that involve simply cutting the prosthesis off, the WAM Key allows for a controlled lifting motion to detach the bridge from its abutments.
Why Use a WAM Key for a bridge removal?
- Minimally Invasive: Reduces stress on natural teeth and prevents unnecessary damage to the crown or bridge.
- Efficient Removal: Works quickly without the need for excessive force.
- Reusability: In most cases, the bridge may be re-cemented if removal is successful without too much damage. This is the by far the main reason to use a WAM key.
When do you use a WAM key to remove a dental bridge?
The main and only time that we feel a WAM key is truly helpful is if the patient has as dental bridge that needs removal for some reason but we want to keep the bridge in tact. With the advent of dental implants there are far fewer bridges being done today and thus the use of the WAM key is decreasing. The most common reasons are
- A dental bridge is loose and off of one of the abutments and we wish to remove to recement the entire bridge.
- We are removing the bridge and replacing but want to use the existing bridge as a temporary or for reference for the lab.
Step-by-Step Guide to Removing a Dental Bridge with a WAM Key
First: Assess the Bridge or Crown
Before attempting removal, evaluate the dental bridge to determine if it is a good candidate for the WAM Key technique. Ensure that:
- The teeth are not excessively decayed or fractured.
- The bridge or crown is still in good shape and is not of need for replacement.
Second: Identify the Fulcrum Point
- The WAM Key works by applying force at a strategic point under the bridge and above the tooth.
- Locate the margin between the bridge and the abutment teeth where you can insert the WAM key.
- Drill a hole or slot in that area to insert the WAM key. The WAM key has 3 sizes.
- If necessary, use an ultrasonic scaler to loosen any excess cement.
Third: Insert the WAM Key
- Position the WAM Key tip at the fulcrum point.
- Rotate the WAM key either direction to get the bridge or crown to pop.
Fourth: Remove the Bridge
- Once the bridge begins to lift, continue applying pressure until it detaches completely.
- Be cautious to avoid excessive force, which could damage the underlying abutments.
- Once removed, inspect the bridge and abutments for any residual cement or damage.
Lastly: Post-Removal Care
- Clean the abutment teeth to remove any remaining cement.
- Assess whether the bridge can be re-cemented or if a new restoration is required.
Final Thoughts
Using a WAM Key to remove a dental bridge is a highly effective method that preserves the integrity of both the prosthetic and the natural teeth. However, it requires precision and expertise.
By following these steps, you can understand how the WAM Key facilitates a more efficient and less traumatic bridge removal process, benefiting both patients and dental practitioners alike.
